Third Trimester Stomach Pain, Causes and Management

The third trimester of pregnancy is a time of anticipation and enjoyment, as the new member of the family is going to explore this unexplored new world. However, it can also be a time of discomfort. Many women experience stomach pain in their third trimester and without an understanding of what causes this type of pain, navigating it can be a challenge. Here are some of the most common causes of third trimester stomach pain and some tips to make it an easier experience.

Common Causes of 3rd Trimester Stomach Pain

Braxton Hicks Contractions: It is sometimes called “practice contractions” which can cause discomfort or a tightening feeling in the stomach. However, it is important that a mother is aware about the difference between these contractions and real labor contractions.

Gastrointestinal Issues: The expanding uterus can put pressure on the stomach and intestines, leading to heartburn, indigestion, and constipation, all of which cause abdominal discomfort in varying intensities.

Round Ligament Pain: The round ligaments are whatever support the uterus. They stretch during pregnancy, and as the baby’s head moves down toward the cervix, they can be pulled in such a way that causes pain or cramping in the lower abdomen, even being felt in the groin.

Preterm Labor: Any abdominal pain, with or without regular contractions, back pain, fluid leakage or vaginal bleeding, could indicate preterm labor in the third trimester.

Management and Relief Strategies

Understanding the nature and frequency of pain and ensuring rest is helpful when attempting to manage discomfort. Recognizing real labor is also essential. The occurance and frequency of pain shall be noticed. Sharp aches several times an hour could signify preterm labor. Real contractions may start in the lower back and radiate to your lower abdomen. Menstrual-like cramps can also signal preterm labor.

To relieve round ligament pain, lie down on the side where you feel the comfort. Dietary changes can help minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Eat several small meals a day to avoid stretches, and circumvent spicy and acidic foods, which can lead to heartburn and nausea.

A healthcare provider may suggest gentle stretching or exercise to minimize round ligament pain and improve overall comfort. The blood circulation with exercise reduces overall stress which can help reducing stomach ache.

Up taking maximum amount of water can reduce the chance of Constipation, which is also the main cause of pain during pregnancy trimester.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Pregnant patients should communicate with their healthcare about their aches and pains. A head-to-toe assessment of discomfort at every prenatal visit can lead to a persistent and comprehensive discussion. Some discomfort during pregnancy is common. Pain with any of these symptoms requires immediate medical care:

a) Severe or persistent pain.

b) Pain accompanied by contractions before 37 weeks gestation.

c) Any sign of preterm labor.

d) Pain accompanied by bleeding, severe headache or other worrisome symptoms.

Conclusion

Third trimester stomach pain might be common, but it should not be ignored when it comes. Understanding what causes it, what makes it better, and what makes it worse certainly helpful to any woman. Then speaking with a healthcare professional and taking care of oneself is cruical and essential.
